About Perth
Perth is located in Western Australia the continent’s most south-western point. Although quite a young city, there is still plenty of neo-classical architecture and colonial buildings tucked away around the downtown area. These can easily be explored on foot and include St Mary’s Cathedral, His Majesty’s Theatre, Perth Town Hall, Government House, and the Palace Hotel.
The city centre is situated on the Swan River and, on the west side, Perth rises to Kings Park which offers a pleasant view overlooking the city.
Perth is known for its excellent seafood restaurants, but you can also pick up a wide range of reasonably priced international cuisine in the ever popular food halls.
For those after a bit of excitement, Northbridge and Fremantle are definitely the places to check out for nightlife.
Perth receives moderate though highly seasonal rainfall. Summers are generally hot and dry, lasting from late December to late March, with February generally being the hottest month of the year, making Perth a classic example of a Mediterranean. Summer is not completely devoid of rain with sporadic rainfall in the form of short-lived thunderstorms, weak cold fronts and on very rare occasions decaying tropical cyclones which can bring significant falls.
Getting to Perth
Perth Airport has both international and domestic airports that stand about 8km east of the city. Some overseas airlines fly directly into Perth itself, but the majority of tourists arrive here having already passed through the eastern states.
There are direct domestic flights to Perth from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Uluru, Darwin and Alice Springs. You can also fly to other centres in the region such as Albany, Carnarvon, Esperance, Exmouth, Kalgoorlie, Geraldton, Monkey Mia, Meekatharra and Wiluna.
On arrival at the airports there are privately-run buses which meet every flight and then travel into the city’s hotels and hostels. The fare is approximately A$5. Alternatively, a suburban bus also runs approximately every hour and is substantially cheaper.
If your looking to drive you can either take the major highways to the next regional centre – invariably long drives in themselves – or head into the great Australian outback for a magical mystery tour at your own pace.
All long haul buses and trains arrive at the Westrail Centre on the east of Perth. These include daily bus services from Adelaide to Perth, or some choose to make the 56 hour journey to Darwin. Buses also go to all regional centres.
The Indian-Pacific train line runs from Perth to Sydney via Adelaide. It is acclaimed as one of the world's greatest train journeys. You can also take trains to York, Kalgoorlie and Bunbury.
Perth Surrounds

Exploring Perth
If you’re planning a day’s outing, there is plenty to see both close to Perth itself and further afield, driving out into the surrounding wilderness.
There are a number of comfortable suburbs which fringe the Swan River enhanced by the Indian Ocean’s balmy beaches. Cosmopolitan Subiaco is a hillside hideaway where many a weary traveller stops to take a break. Romantic Fremantle, which hosted the Americas Cup in 1987, is far more laid-back and has a great waterfront atmosphere and interesting maritime history.
Rent a car in Perth and discover the premier coastline and beachside suburbs along the Sunset Coast. Enjoy the surf at Swanbourne Beach, Cottesloe Beach, Trigg Beach (a popular beach for surfing) and Scarborough Beach (a popular swimming and surfing beach). Or drive south to Rockingham and Mandurah for dolphins, foreshore picnicking and crabbing.
If you want to venture slightly further away from Perth itself, the whole of the South West is a lush hinterland filled with many amazing forests and beautiful seaside towns. Imparticular, the towns of Albany and Esperance both enjoy good climates and are a pleasant stop-over for anyone on a coastal tour.
Margaret River is home to many fertile winelands and is a popular resort for all wine connoisseurs. Close by, the incredible Karri and Jarrah forests near Bridgetown must also be seen.
Cuisine in Perth
Perth restaurants offer locals and visitors alike an abundance of dining experiences. From the posh nosh on the Perth waterfront, to cheap and cheerful Perth cafes. As the locals will proudly attest, there's nothing quite like dining in Perth, eating gourmet fare under a balmy Summer night sky. Perth restaurants include dining on a variety of cuisines including Italian, Vietnamese, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Nepalese, Japanese, Turkish, Korean, Greek and Ethiopian. Here are some of our suggestions for the next time you visit Perth:
Jackson’s Restaurant: They say it’s the quiet ones you have to watch out for and Neal Jackson, working away in his gleaming open kitchen producing dishes like snow pea and mint ice cream in a smoked salmon cone, always wears a satisfied smile. That’s because he’s a wicked seducer who knows exactly what he is doing to the couples bathing in the glow of his intimate eatery.
Alure Restaurant: That old warning to forget about the food at a restaurant with a view is turned on its head here among a bright and breezy decor. The seafood- based offerings from this sparkling new jewel in the Burswood’s crown – whether you opt for crayfish ravioli or choose from the sushi bar – are absolutely unforgettable.
Balthazar Bar Restaurant: Imagine a dimly lit restaurant in an old building in the heart of the city where the staff are as cool as the music on the sound system. There’s a wall of the best wine from boutique wineries around the world and the menu of modern Australian choices oozes self- confidence.
Star Anise: Any old chef can follow a recipe but few have the self-belief of David Coomer who, 10 years ago, took over a modest old house in Shenton Park and turned it into a 75-seat shrine to adventurous cuisine. He twists and tweaks modern Australian dishes with Asian influences. He blazes a radical trail – with pigeon, licorice bullets and squid-ink tortellini – through the food establishment.
