About Canberra
Canberra is located within the ACT (Australian Capital Territory). Around 300,000 people call the Canberra home and is one of only two cities in the world built with a premeditated design. In fact, it’s the largest inland city in Australia. When driving in and around the Canebrra in your car rental, you will experience the almost symmetrical design of the city with planned straight and curved streets making driving around easy.
Canberra's suburbs are separated by native bushland. Its major tourist attractions are set around an artificial lake surrounded by bicycle tracks. These include the National Gallery, Parliament House and the Parliamentary Triangle.
Most shops and restaurants are in the Civic and Manuka districts just south of the lake. There are also many cafes spread in and around the inner suburbs. Civic is also the centre of Canberra's nightlife, which is much more lively than the city’s reputation may suggest.
Canberra has four distinct seasons, because of its latitude, elevation and distance from the coast. The climates of most Australian coastal areas, which include all the state capital cities, are moderated by the sea. Canberra experiences hot, quite dry summers, and cold winters with heavy fog and frequent frosts, with a rare spot of snow in the CBD, however the surrounding areas get annual snowfall through winter and often the snow capped mountains can be seen from the CBD.
Getting to Canberra
Canberra airport is about 7km east of the city. It is a domestic airport only. Flights arrive here from all capital cities as well as from most towns in New South Wales, although many inevitably stopover in Sydney or Melbourne en route.
Interstate buses arrive at the Jolimont Centre, which is in Civic. Buses run from Canberra to Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne, with easy connections to all capital cities. Buses can also be caught to the south coast, the snowfields and throughout NSW.
The city’s railway station is based on the south side of the lake in Kingston. From here trains run direct to Sydney stopping at most major towns on the way. Combined bus-train trips to Melbourne are available and help to break up the otherwise massive journey a little bit.
Hire a car and you’ll find that the Hume Highway runs between Melbourne and Sydney, passing about 50km north of Canberra. You connect with it by driving to Goulburn or Yass, depending on whether you're heading north or south. To the south the Monaro Highway will take you to Cooma, the snowfields of the Snowy Mountains, and the coast. If you want a quote on Canberra car rental, simply obtain a quote now.

Exploring Canberra
The Australian Capital Territory is 80km from north to south and is about 30km wide. It is landlocked within the mountainous country of southeastern New South Wales. Although relatively small by Australian standards there is still a lot to see and the area is best explored by car.
The Namadgi National Park occupies the whole southwestern area of the territory, but many of the sights to see lie within Canberra and its surrounding suburbs in the northeast of the territory.
The city itself is arranged around the artificial Lake Burley Griffin. On the northern side of the lake lies Civic, a nice drive into pretty shops and plazas near the university.
Further out, suburbs such as Reid, Braddon, Turner and Acton offer a lovely afternoon’s stroll, whether it is around one of the many malls or parks in the area.
Canberra is also surrounded by the satellite towns of Woden, Belconnen and Tuggeranong. Here many people who are doing more than just passing through the area often decide to stop and set up base.
The city is also in a great location for those choosing to visit the nearby delights of the Snowy Mountains and NSW’s southern coast.
Cuisine in Canberra
Here are some of our suggestions for the next time you visit Canberra:
The Chairman and Yip: Recommended as one of the city's best Chinese restaurants, the menu is far from traditional, with classics given a new twist and even some European-influenced dishes (especially in the dessert section).
Rubicon Restaurant: Rubicon is a stylish restaurant which, despite being firmly entrenched in the Canberra restaurant scene, is still one of the national capital's best- kept secrets. Rubicon's innovative mod-European menu is skilfully prepared and artfully presented.
Milk and Honey: This award winning restaurant offers a shared food concept that enables diners to experience diverse flavours and dishes as well as being a fun eating experience. The soy chicken drumsticks with chilli lime and mint dipping sauce are already a favourite; while wok-tossed chilli sea salt Balmain bugs and prawns on papaya salad with lime tempt further.
Delissio Restaurant: A suburban gem tucked away in Curtin, Delissio is certainly worth the drive for those not in the immediate vicinity. It has been booked out most nights since it first opened - a testament to the strong market for such an establishment in the area. The menu goes on to offer a large range of pizzas, pastas and risotto, as well as hearty main meals such as chicken gumbo and kangaroo rump.
