About Adelaide Airport

Adelaide Airport is the principal airport in the South Australian capital of Adelaide. It is located approximately 8 kilometres from the city centre. It is the fifth busiest airport in Australia, servicing over 6.3 million passengers in 2006/2007.

First opened on 16 February 1955, the airport was established to replace Parafield Airport as the main airport for Adelaide. It was built on land once used for market gardens and which included wetlands of Patawalonga Creek. Passenger flights are operated from a state-of-the-art dual international/domestic terminal that was opened in 2005.

Adelaide Airport is officially owned by the Commonwealth Government, but is run by Adelaide Airport Ltd, and began its life as market gardens and wetlands from the nearby Patawalonga Creek. The first airport in Adelaide was built in 1921, primarily to service mail runs between Adelaide and Sydney, and as business expanded a new airport was built in 1927. Within 20 years the demand had outstripped what the small Parafield Airport could supply, and in 1954 a new airport . located at West Torrens (now West Beach) . began servicing flights.

By 1982 the airport was seeing regular international flights with the completion of an international terminal. In 2005 a new building was constructed to house both the international and domestic flights . in October of the following year this terminal was named Capital City Airport of the Year. The next year it was named the world.s second best airport for the 5-15 million passengers category.

The airport was redeveloped in 2005 at a cost of $260 million. Before the redevelopment, the old airport terminal was criticised for its limited capacity and lack of aerobridges.

The new terminal was opened on October 2005. However, Adelaide Airport Limited announced soon afterwards that only international flights would use the new facility immediately due to problems with the fuel pumps and underground pipes. These issues were rectified and the new terminal was used for all flights from February 2006.

The new airport terminal is approximately 850 metres end to end and is capable of handling 27 aircraft, simultaneously and processing 3,000 passengers per hour. It includes high amenity public and airline lounges, 14 glass-sided aerobridges, 42 common user check-in desks and 34 shop fronts. Free wireless internet is also provided throughout the terminal.

The modern day airport now houses five international passenger airlines: Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas and Singapore. An international freight carrier is housed there, in Singapore Airlines Cargo, as are the domestic carriers Qantas (including Jetstar), Tiger Airways and Virgin Blue.
